Socialist movement undermined libertarian strategy
The radicalism of the socialists movement outflanked libertarians on the left. Libertarians allowed themselves to be viewed as an intermediate option between conservatism and socialism. Succumbing to this position lead to the strategic error of not advocating for radical change, in order to distance themselves from the socialist. Abandoning the goal of radical progress toward liberty undercut their entire reason for the movement.
